Description
Designed by Carl Auböck II in 1953/54, the “Bird” #4366 is one of the quietest yet most compelling sculptures produced by the Viennese workshop. With only a few precise lines, Auböck condenses the animal into an almost abstract silhouette. Body, neck and head remain immediately recognisable without being treated naturalistically.
The dark patinated brass body has a warm, nuanced surface, while the polished head introduces a precise point of reflected light. The sculpture is sand-cast in Vienna using the original mould and subsequently finished by hand. Measuring 20 centimetres in length, it appears light and animated while retaining the physical presence of solid brass. Although it may also serve as an unusual paperweight, it is foremost an independent—and too often overlooked—work of sculpture.
