Description
A candle snuffer is a purely functional object – yet in the hands of Carl Auböck, even such an everyday tool becomes a small piece of Viennese design history.
The Candle Snuffer #3471 was designed in 1948 by Carl Auböck II (1900–1957) and is still produced today by the Werkstätte Carl Auböck in Vienna. Its design is remarkably restrained: a slender, elegantly shaped handle in polished brass rests on a small walnut base. Nothing is superfluous; every element serves the function and the clarity of the overall form.
This combination of functionality and sculptural simplicity is characteristic of Carl Auböck's work. The warm walnut provides a natural contrast to the reflective surface of the polished brass, allowing the candle snuffer to stand discreetly yet confidently beside a candleholder or on a table.
A small functional object with a remarkable design presence – designed in 1948 and still produced according to the original design.
