Candleholder "Cobra" - Brass and Raffia

The “Cobra” candlestick #4162 was designed by Carl Auböck II in 1952. Its slender, almost weightless silhouette gives the functional object a distinctive sculptural presence.

The delicately curved frame is made of patinated brass and traditionally wrapped by hand with raffia. The contrast between the dark metal, the natural fibre and the polished brass cone is characteristic of the refined material combinations associated with the Carl Auböck Workshop.

To insert a taper candle, the candlestick is turned upside down and the candle is placed into the socket from below. The conical brass element can be removed for separate cleaning – an unusual and thoughtfully conceived functional detail.

The “Cobra” continues to be made at the Carl Auböck Workshop in Vienna. Subtle variations in the patination, raffia wrapping and surface finish reflect the handcrafted nature of every individual piece.

With its reduced linear form, the “Cobra” functions both as a candlestick and as an independent design object. It combines the experimental spirit of Viennese Modernism with the playful elegance of mid-century design.
