Description
The "Praying Hands" bookends are among the most expressive designs by Carl Auböck II. Created in 1947, this remarkable design combines functionality with a strong sculptural presence and reflects the distinctive language of the Carl Auböck workshop.
The two solid brass elements evoke the gesture of folded hands while remaining deliberately abstract. Rather than depicting a literal form, Auböck reduces the familiar gesture to its essential lines and proportions, creating an object that feels both timeless and poetic.
A unique feature of this design is its versatility. By rotating the two elements by 180 degrees, two entirely different compositions are created – transforming the bookend set into almost two different sculptural arrangements.
Handcrafted in Austria from solid brass with both polished and patinated surfaces, the "Praying Hands" bookends highlight the exceptional craftsmanship and refined material contrasts that define the work of the Carl Auböck workshop.
As an authentic example of Austrian Mid-Century Design, this piece represents Carl Auböck’s ability to transform everyday objects into timeless works of functional art.
