Makers

Cutipol represents a distinctly Portuguese approach to cutlery: technically accomplished, refined in the hand and confident enough to avoid unnecessary decoration. Founded in 1963, the family business grew from an earlier workshop tradition and continues to develop and manufacture its collections in Portugal. Advanced machinery – some of it engineered in-house – works alongside skilled manual processes, particularly where proportion, surface and finishing require the judgement of an experienced hand.

Contemporum. first encountered Cutipol in 2006 through the recommendation of a trusted colleague. When we launched in 2018, the company naturally became part of our selection from the outset. GOA and MOON remain central to our edit, not because they follow a particular style, but because both have proved how enduring a clearly resolved piece of cutlery can be.

Designed by José Joaquim Ribeiro in 2004, GOA has become one of the most recognisable contemporary flatware collections. Its slender resin handles, finely balanced stainless-steel components and precise meeting of two contrasting materials create a silhouette that is immediately identifiable. This success has also made GOA one of the world’s most widely copied and counterfeited cutlery designs.

Photographs alone may not reveal the difference. The genuine article becomes apparent through touch and use: consistent hand-brushed surfaces, carefully judged weight, comfortable balance, structural strength and clean transitions between materials. An original GOA piece is constructed from two materials without relying on painted imitations, visible screws or crude adhesive connections. These details are fundamental to its performance, not merely to its appearance.

Cutipol was also among the early manufacturers to establish black cutlery as a serious contemporary design choice, well before the finish became an international interiors trend. MOON Black Matte expresses this idea in its purest form. Made entirely from stainless steel, its continuous dark surface and soft, reduced geometry give the collection a sculptural presence without compromising everyday practicality.

Both GOA and MOON are suited to private homes, restaurants, hotels and larger professional settings. Beyond the pieces shown online, Contemporum. can supply the wider Cutipol programme on request, including additional collections, colours, finishes, individual utensils and extensive services. We are also happy to assist interior designers, architects and hospitality clients with specification, pricing and larger quantities.

Every Cutipol piece offered by Contemporum. is an original manufactured in Portugal. GOA’s outline may be easy to imitate; its balance, construction and quality of finish are not.
